The name An Ocean Away represents how, despite how much they love one another, Meredith and Derek have separated themselves. Derek chooses Addison because he wants to give it another try because they were married together for so long, he felt that the connection still might be there. And Meredith? She's heartbroken because she asked him to choose her over Addison and everyone in the hospital knows about it and can't seem to stop talking about it. The distance that they put between them might as well be as wide as an ocean. Derek wants to help her, but he can't help her if he's the one that broke her to begin with.
