About 'Guilty Pleasures'
This is the 1st book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton. The main character is, of course, Anita. Other major characters include Nikolaos (the Master of the City, >1000 years old and looks to be a very young girl, has the ability to call rats/wererats and can be awake during the day), Jean-claude (conceals his true power, ends up manipulating Anita to kill Nikolaos so that he can become the Master of the City) and Edward (aka Ted Forrester, fellow bounty hunter/federal marshall, basically likes playing with fun new toys). At this point in the series, Anita is the most uncomfortable she will ever be with the supernatural (vampires and were-creatures alike) and her own powers, she only progressives from this book forward.
