Easy Decorations
I’m not particularly a fan of empty or impersonal looking rooms. I like organized messes and chaos and the more personal items around the better! Here are some easy decorations that you can make that will have your room looking more like your own.
If you have any shot glasses that you don’t plan on using, you can put tea light candles into them and they make great candle holders. Granted, it is a little difficult to light the candles unless you have one of those long lighters (like the ones that are used for the barbecue), but it makes a nice decoration.
Any plain photo frames that you don’t like? Use modge podge (also known as PVC glue, I believe) and paste on some comics onto it. Be sure to put the modge podge onto the frame first, put the comics on top, and then cover the outside of the comics with the modge podge as well. It will end up being shiny when it’s all dry.
Making a French memo-board requires you to either own a cork board that you don’t mind tweaking or you buying one. You’ll need a cork board with a frame, and you cut a piece of 0.5″ foam that is the same size as the entire board. With either a staple gun (if the frame is wood) or nails and a hammer, you want to be able to cover the entire front of the board and have enough of fabric allowance to fold onto the frame on the back (This is where you should use a staple gun or the hammer to staple or nail the fabric to the frame. Make sure that the staples or nails don’t poke through to to the front!). Using ribbon in a complimentary or accenting colours, arrange the ribbon so that it forms criss-crosses across the front, making diamonds. Where the ribbons overlap, you should take pins or thumb tacks and push it all the way in until it’s firmly in the cork board. Alternatively, you can coat the pin part with glue or contact cement to make sure that they don’t slip out. Once it’s dried, if you went the route of glue or contact cement, you can put it up again.
For some easy magnets, buy some of those flat clear marbles (they’re normally sold for floral or aquarium purposes, they’re rounded on one side but flat on the other). Trace the flat side and cut out something cute that’s the same size (magazine image, celebrity face, fabric patterns) and glue that on. Then, find a piece of strong magnet (the marbles are kind of heavy, after all), glue that on as well. Just a word of advice, use strong glue for this. A glue gun doesn’t work very well for this.
