And now I’m all rambling…
So I’ve been working on study notes for the last week. I actually got up early enough to head out to school on Tuesday to study in the library. All the other days I either woke up around 8am (when I wanted to be at school already) so I just stayed at home to study. Which worked well, because I love the fact that I can just stay in my room in my pjs and comfy fleecy robe (which is warm!) and just work away on my laptop. I’ve also been watching podcasts during my study breaks (and listening to them as well). Mostly knitting related, because I’ve suddenly fallen back into knitting (I did take a loooong break without knitting a darn thing). I haven’t been able to find any crocheting podcasts that I like. I’m a big fan of the ones with video, not just audio, because I like getting to see the projects. I also caught up on the Savage Love podcast. Because who doesn’t like to listen to Dan Savage answer his caller’s questions about sex? (The answer: prudes.)
I’m actually ahead of my studying schedule. I finished all my study notes for zoogeography & paleogeology. I’m almost done going through learning goals for my climate change class (whoot). I finished the notes for my parasitology take-home final, which is another essay. I did a little bit of outline for that paper, not as much as I would have liked to have done, but I did most of it. I’m hoping to finish the climate change study notes & parasitology paper outlining Saturday morning, because I’ll be going out for lunch with the family and then listening to my sister’s choir sing Christmas carols in the mall (horrible acoustics there, just got to say…).
I got an email from an offlinefriend asking me why I never blog about Clay anymore… Not sure if she was more concerned or if she was just being nosy. I’m going to go with concerned, because being nosy is never cool. There’s not really a whole lot to report on the boyfriend front. We are still together, we had our third anniversary in September of this year. He works a stupid amount of hours (like seriously stupid amount of hours) and I spend a lot of time studying. Well, I always have an abundance of free time to spend with him, but he works what feels like 24/7. It’s probably closer to like 12-16/7, but that’s still a lot of hours in a week and he does need to sleep. I’ve also been using my sadly boyfriend-free time to work on his Christmas present. It’s going to be awesome. And he’s going to love it. Mostly because I say that he will… I’m really trying to put together something thoughtful and practical and useful and all those things. But I always end up coming up with something impractical, but still super awesome. So we’ll see how that goes… Wow, rambling. We also don’t live in the same city (maybe ~30-45min drive, depending on the the traffic, so it does make things difficult at times. But I don’t know, I haven’t been all gushy about the time that we do spend together, because if I did, my blog posts would be like “So, I saw the boyfriend and we did A and he made me B for dinner.” and I would also have to totally censor my blog posts from some of the activities that occur, for obvious reasons… And with that… Change of topics!
This didn’t really get mentioned on the blog, but my dad went away on vacation/trip/whatever for three months. He went to visit relatives and whatnot. Came back with a lot of gifts, which is always appreciated. He was away during my birthday so he brought me back this:
Yes, it is another Blythe doll. (He also got me another one, but she’s under the tree for Christmas.) The doll’s stock name is Simply Bubble Boom. She’s a limited edition doll, at 1500 dolls in this model. She was actually part of a trio of crime-fighting skaters. Yes, I said skaters. She came with some super cute orange skates, not pictured. The other doll that my dad got me for my Christmas present was Simply Sparkly Spark (who has blue hair!) and the last of the trio (that I’m not getting) is Simply Thumpty Thump (who has a bright purple hair colour). I’m really happy with her. Her hair is a neon reddish-orange, so it looks rather pink in some lights and rather orange in others. Which is kind of really awesome. I decided name her Moxie, and she is my 8th Blythe doll and first in the FBL mold.
(For those who don’t really like Blythes or just dolls in general; sorry about the photo and the blurb… But I like ’em! And I do try to restrict dolly talk to the designated blog when I can. But I was just super pleased at getting a new doll for my birthday… and there will probably be photos of my Christmas doll too.)
]]>It’s my last first term of this degree (fingers crossed). I have four classes. Four classes that I didn’t always like. I liked the idea of them. I liked the descriptions of them. I hated the amount of work that each professor made his class sound like (I only have male professors this term). But now I’ve found that I like my classes. Some that I even love. (It may also help that some of my profs are very funny. And that one of them has a Scottish accent – he’s not much to look at but the accent helps me to stay awake because I need to focus when he says words that are pronounced differently in the UK than it is in Canada.)
I had my first midterm exam on the last day of September. It was bad because I had to run across campus to get there on time. I normally walk and can get there on time. That Friday, I had gotten out of my previous class on time, had to briskly walk to the building. There were exams already being handed out, I had to find a seat, get my pencils, eraser and pens out. Oh, and my student card. I always forget that I need that out during an examination (especially when requested). I also hate that photo on my student card (but who doesn’t?). The results of that midterm came in just this past Friday. I did better than average (the average being 75%). I’ve developed better study habits since my first year of university – actually reading ahead, reviewing notes after classes, studying ahead of time, studying with like-minded people.
I’m working on getting together my documents for my applications for next year as I’m applying for even more schooling. I want to do another Bachelors degree (nursing). I’ve ordered high school and university transcripts. I’m waiting on those to arrive in the mail, I’m also waiting on reference letters from my volunteering place. The application process is stressful at times – needing to gathering all the documents and references and write letters of intent and essays. But this is something that I really want to do. For most of what I can remember back, I’ve wanted to become a nurse. So even though the application process is stressful and the waiting period will be stressful as well, I’ll need to suck it up and get through it.
In other news, I’ve recently acquired a vintage 1972 Blythe doll. I know a lot of people who read this blog aren’t doll people. But it’s a nice hobby to have, I’ve met some fantastic people through the hobby. I even attended a convention for Blythe in June 2011 (it was in Portland, OR – my first solo trip anywhere and my first vacation [it was for 4 days] in years). So despite what people might think about adults having dolls and collecting them – there’s nothing wrong with it. I figure as long as I’m not pretending that they’re my children (that would be my stick insects, thank you very much) or actually alive, it’s all good. I liked dolls as a child and I played make believe with them.
It’s an extension of my childhood that goes well with the fact that I still have a teddy bear that stays on my bed. But yes, I’ve acquired a vintage one (all the rest of my Blythe dolls are modern productions, all produced from the 2000s onward). And I’ve already been informed by my parents that I’ll be receiving another two this year (one for my birthday and one for Christmas).
So other than school, volunteering and doll(s), I haven’t been doing much lately. I haven’t had time for crafting, which I hope to change soon. But I did have time to bake recently (no photos as said baked goods were consumed rapidly by family members and myself). I weighed myself recently and after getting all wide-eyed at the number (thanks, Mister Scale), I’ve decided to go on a bit of a diet. Nothing too extreme, I’m going to try my best not to get completely obsessed with it (something I fell into the habit of when I was in middle and high school and essentially stopped eating, and I also dropped a lot of weight doing that). I do need to cut out fast food though (plus it’s expensive $) and to eat more fruits and vegetables (hello carrot sticks). We’ll see how it goes! I’m also planning on increasing my daily water intake as well and overall just increasing the amount of good, healthy foods. I suppose I should buy whole wheat bagels instead of plain white ones now then…
]]>(On a side note, I’ve actually been trying to write a new blog post for Imaginary Sunshine for the last few days. Every time I’m about to hit the Publish button, I reread my post and realize that I spent the entire time bitching about work. And I just can’t publish that – mostly because I’d have to go back and erase everyone’s names. And publishing people’s names would be very rude.)
(I hope you’ve all realized that I don’t go about writing people’s names. Unless they’re already online with public accounts. Or unless they’re my boyfriend. Because Clay gets special treatment
and really, how lazy would I have to be to just write C all the time instead of including the last three letters???)
Let’s see, let’s see… What is new in Michelle’s life?
Mini-thrifting hauls
I go thrift store shipping way too often it seems. And I never get a lot of things at once, which is good for my bank account (yay!). But last weekend I had gone with my sister and there was this bag full of Barbie kitchen things (a fridge, oven/stove, dishwasher, sink, some little random things like frying pan, pot, milk, egg carton). Super, super cute and super, super cheap ($4.99 for the entire set). It’s also super, super pink. Which means this kitchen set is going to set me back quite a bit more as I plan on buying the paint that’s made for plastic (eg. not plain acrylics) to give it all a bit of a makeover. I’m thinking of getting the paints in white, black and maybe a nice blue/turquoise/teal to make it nicer looking than just… pink. Nothing against pink, but I don’t think my Blythes would appreciate a pink dishwasher (do they even make dishwashers for people in pink??).
Fun fact: I looked up ‘Barbie fridge’ on eBay and found the one that I had gotten at the thrift store. The person who wrote up the listing listed it as vintage. The year it was made? 1994. I felt old after reading that listing.
Other things I’ve gotten recently include: (actual) vintage lace ribbon and piping (years on packaging was 40s and 50s), a couple silk scarves and buttons (for crafting).
I’ll be going to a flea market-type of thing tomorrow. The major focus is vintage and retro style things, so it should be good. I’m going with some dolly friends, which leads me to the next thing…
Apparently there’s other doll-minded people who live in the same general area as me
And this makes me very happy! There was what is known as a Blythe Meet (yes, we’re all so original with naming things) last Sunday where I met a bunch of other Blythe collectors. We hung out for a few hours to talk about dolls, gushed about what the dolls were wearing, asked each other questions about each others dolls… It was good fun. Meeting dolly people is always exciting for me. Before Portland/BlytheCon, I didn’t really think there could be that many other Blythe collectors in my area. Apparently there are some! And now I know them! Yay!
I’m not a workaholic. But everyone else I seem to know is…
By ‘everyone’, I mean my boss (the one who approved my overtime, yay!!!), other people in one of the departments that I work in (as of Thursday, I’m in three departments at work now… I was not consulted about this prior to having my time shuffled into three different departments, just to let you know!), and my darling boyfriend (who’s currently at work as I type this). On a Saturday. But regardless, I still work more than 40 hours per week now – but my overtime has been approved because my workaholic boss (who fully admits to being a workaholic in a good-mannered kind of way) had it approved and will gladly sign for me to get that time-and-a-half as long as I do all my OT in his department – I don’t mind doing this at all because he’s an incredibly laid back boss as it goes and he’s super nice (and did I mention that he had my OT approved? And thus I get more monies now?). I decided that all of my OT money plus my tax credit cheques (being very mildly employed has it’s slight benefits – the governments sends out cheques 3 times a year to help people pay taxes on things that they need to buy) is going to be saved towards something fantastic. And by something fantastic I mean a vintage 1972 Blythe doll. (I most definitely need to save to justify that purchase!)
And now it’s time for…
Possibly a slice of cheesecake before settling down for the night. Maybe time for a movie?

Last Saturday (18th), I got up at an awful and early time to head to the Greyhound Station. I was in transit from 6:15am until about 10:40am (or so) when I arrived in Seattle, WA. From there I had a 3 hour ‘transfer wait’ time before my 2nd bus of the day to arrive in Portland, OR at about 5:30pm. So I spent my time in Seattle eating lunch (food!) and I spent most of the time in the waiting area of the Greyhound Station just (not-so) patiently waiting for the time to arrive to board the bus.
Portland is amazing. I had gone down because it was the location of BlytheCon 2011. It’s incredibly clean, haha, and the transit system was fantastic. The buses looked the same as they do here (the same company logo on the side, so I can only assume that the insides were the same as the ones I’m used to), but I loved the light rail system that they have down there! It was convenient and easy to use, which is great for a newbie to an area. Bus drivers don’t talk very much at all, but at least they were both fairly nice.

^ My view from outside of my hotel room at La Quinta Inn in Portland (Lloyd District). It was a decent hotel at a fantastic price. Plus it was close to everything I needed (access to the light rail system, close to a mall, lots of restaurants close by).

^ Oodles of customized Blythes (and another doll, can’t recall the name of him at this moment) at a small Blythe meet that happened on Sunday June 19th (day before BlytheCon) at Director Park.

^ A photo from the cocktail party the night before BlytheCon. I got to meet so many fantastic people! It was a lot of fun.

^ The MAX line stop closest to my hotel. Such a convenient stop – plus it was in the free rail zone so I got to ride for free!

^ A table full of dolls at BlytheCon! It was a lot of fun getting to see all the different types of Blythes and getting to meet people who like Blythe like I do.

^ Lots of people! I loved the balloons (my chair had a blue balloon on a brown ribbon).

^ My BlytheCon loot! There’s a few things that I bought in there, some cards that I had gotten from people, a dress that I had won in the raffle, some cute things like postcards and bookmarks in the swag bag and swap items from a Blythe friend.

I got back to Canada on Tuesday, June 21st. It was so great to be home and to be connected again! I had wifi at the hotel so I was able to get in touch with people, but it’s a lot nicer being able to text without worry of a huge cell phone bill or just hopping onto the network’s internet without worrying about roaming data charges!
I was back to work on Wednesday June 22nd, I had to get caught up on work (and oh my gosh, they had left me way too much to do!) and I started working in a new department as well (which was fantastic!). I now split my time between doing customer service work (taking phone calls from customers and entering orders) and doing data entry for another department.
The Ataris played in Vancouver (!) on Thursday, which I just had to go see with my friend K. It was a lot of fun, my throat hurt a little bit Friday morning (mostly because of all the singing along that I just had to do with the songs that I love). There were three openers, which took a long while to get through but it was totally worth it to listen to Kristopher Roe sing.
And then Friday was a bit of a wash – just work and going out for lunch with coworkers. And then today (Saturday) was a dentist appointment day and trying to figure out what I’m taking next year…
]]>Oh, I’ve also learned what every good webmaster knows: have giveaway, will have hits/comments/linkbacks skyrocket. Which isn’t bad, to say the least.
Other things in life, since my Canada Day incident with a cat and subsequently stupid people have been fairly low key and fairly tame. I paid my credit card bill, have thought out what courses I want to take next year (although if the fourth years keep on filling them up, I don’t know what I’m going to be taking next year because I wanted my fourth year to be my ‘easy’ year – if I take 28 credits like I want to for my 3rd year, I only need another 20 credits for my 4th year, whoot). I do have a good chance of getting into two classes that are on my ‘want-to-take’ list – my academic advisor is teaching/lecturing for those and she said that she can force-add me into the class rosters if needed.
Oh! I met my paternally approved ‘BFF’ on Saturday. So hilarious. She wants to go to the same school as I do, but my dad lied when he said that she was starting this year, she’s actually finishing up her secondary education still and has one more year to go. She wants to go into pharmacy, not nursing. I don’t know a thing about the requirements for fulfilling first year pre-pharmacy, or what pharmacy even looks at. She wants to go into the Faculty of Science for her first year, but doesn’t like math, chemistry, physics or biology. I just said ‘good luck’ to her, as if pharmacy requires general first year science, she’ll need to take all four, at least 2 classes each, plus 2 classes of English. Anyways, I’m really not sure why my dad thought it’d be a great idea for us to meet/talk/whatever when she doesn’t even want to go into the same program as me. I can’t even give her any advice for application or admissions requirements because they’ve changed everything since I entered my school. Besides the fact that I’m domestic student… and went through the Canadian public school system… Sigh.
In other news… Finally finished up a new crochet pattern (just editing my writing – fixing typos, grammatical errors, etc.) and then going to get that up on chelle-chelle.com. Not feeling the greatest today for just a mountain worth of reasons. Starting with my voice, or lack thereof. Off to go and crawl back into bed soon. Or maybe I’ll just have some marshmallows. … sugar’s my catchall cure for everything.
]]>I have also been working on items for a Blythe ‘geekcraft’ swap that I’m participating in (conditions include… all handmade things by the giver only):
On the left is Tertiary Jane (wearing a Mario mushroom hat) and on the right is Sophie, wearing a black beanie with the Star Trek logo (yay, for internet for letting me know what the logo looks like).
]]>Wednesday
This was the day that it really hit that I got my wisdom teeth pulled. I woke up very tired and sore. The swelling really started to hit. Also, I didn’t eat very much with the medication that my dentist prescribed and it said ‘Take With Food’. Apparently half of a mushed up banana wasn’t enough and my body really did not like the medication and basically rejected it. Which sucked. I got incredibly cranky and ended up sleeping with an ice pack against my face (don’t worry, I pushed it off sometime during my sleep). I watched some of the Olympic events, fell asleep during it though. I didn’t realize that I’d get so tired from getting my teeth pulled. I guess it’s my body’s way of saying that I need to sleep, rest and let my immune system deal with the trauma of minor oral surgery.
Thursday
So Thursday I actually left my house. I went to No Frills just to buy bananas and generic ibuprofen, which was fun. I swear the cashier looked at me funny when she eyed what I had and went “Is that all?” like she was expecting me to have a shopping cart full of stuff. I watched some Olympic events again. I find that I like the ‘racing’ type events the best, or the ones that have the most aerobatic things. So far, I’ve enjoyed watching the moguls (each run is fast and plus they do neat tricks), snowboard cross (racing!), halfpipe (men’s is so much more entertaining that women’s, only because they do more interesting tricks) and some of the figure skating events. Went to bed relatively early (just to wake up again and stayed up until around 1am). Studied for my biology lab midterm (the Tuesday I go back to school) and did some math problems.
Friday (today!)
So far, I’ve taken some photos of my dolls (who’ve been neglected), some things I’ve made for the Blythe Spring Swap (criteria is that everything needs to be handcrafted) and of my sister’s Vancouver 2010 Olympic plushies. I adore them, Quatchi is super cuddly. I plan on repotting my bean plant as it’s outgrown the small pot I initially planted it in, as well was watching Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice (I didn’t last night because I was feeling tired, that’s a first!). I also plan on trying food that’s a little bit more solid today! Since getting my two left wisdom teeth pulled on Tuesday, I’ve consumed: congee (rice porridge), peanut butter, mushed bananas, apple sauce, cream of mushroom soup and clear chicken broth. Mushed bananas are the best since even if I don’t get the pieces really small, I can swallow them straight down. Peanut butter took a lot of effort, the swelling didn’t allow for very good movement of my tongue (TMI?). Cream of mushroom soup was delightful. I’m pleased to be able to say that the swelling has gone down quite considerably, there’s barely a difference between the two sides of my cheeks now (yay!). I’m also able to brush my teeth without being in pain (whoot!) and the incision site for my bottom left wisdom tooth is healing quite nicely!
These are my sister’s plushies. At the back (in the earmuffs) is Quatchi. In the front row, from left to right, is Sumi (Paralympics mascot), Mukmuk (sidekick) and Miga (whom I personally consider to be the mascot who transfers the worst from drawings to plushie form):
And this is my favourite photo that I’ve taken today, it’s of Sophie (my first Blythe doll):
]]>Going out to dinner last night was horrible. My mom heard about this restaurant on the radio and on a tv commercial. They serve “fusion” food (Chinese food and western foods) but the service was absolutely horrible. We got seated very quickly, and we ordered within like maybe 10 minutes of arrival. After we ordered our food for dinner, it took over 50 minutes before the first dish arrived. We’d called a server over (at around 30 min) to see what was taking so long. She apologized for the wait and promised to go see what was going on. At another time (maybe at around 50 min), we called the (same!) server over again, in hopes of just getting rice or something while we were waiting (it was a 4 person combo meal, so we were supposed to get rice and dessert with 4 different dishes) and she sees us waving, walks over, stops, looks at our table and then just turns around and walks away – without even asking us what we were asking for! Every single thing that was brought to our table that night (including the bill) was brought by the manager, with an apology for the wait every single time. One of the dishes was too salty, the rice was cold (!) when it arrived at our table, the person refilling our tea cups spilled into two of dishes and… well… needless to say, they didn’t get a very sizable tip from us. But seriously, 50 minutes? One of the dishes we ordered was a type of fish with vegetables – which should have been the easiest (and quickest!) thing to cook up. The table next to us was seated after we were, ordered after we had ordered and they got their food quickly, ate, paid and left before we even got anything that we had ordered.
My dad just got home from his trip (I’m hesitant to call it a vacation, as he spent some time at tourist spots, but the reason for his trip was a death in the family). During the time, he apparently never got a hair cut and we were all like “Oh. My. Gosh.” when we saw him. There was definitely a lot of photos being taken before his hair cut last night (my mom did it) as it was the only time we’ve ever seen it that long. He did bring back gifts for us! My sister got a really nice watch (however, she’s not sure when she’d get to wear it as it’s not waterproof and she works with tanks full of water at work…), my other sister got a new cell phone (granted, she needs to use a power adapter, but it’s essentially an iPhone lookalike and she’s been wanting a new phone for ages, and her SIM card fits ‘quite nicely’ into it) and I got… Well, heh, I got another Blythe doll. I’m still bouncing around names for her, but she’s quite cute. She’s got black hair, bangs and a bowl/mushroom hair cut. So she pretty much reminds me of me when I was under the age of ten. Not quite sure what to call her, most of my childhood nicknames are related to my name and none of them seem to ‘fit’ her, especially since some of those nicknames are still in use and I haven’t had bangs and a bowl/mushroom cut since I was under the age of 10.
We’d gone out for most of today – out for tea/lunch, grocery shopping, the library (I borrowed Intensely Alice by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor, The Simpsons: An Uncensored, Unauthorized History by John Ortved with the foreword by Douglas Coupland and Rubber Soul by The Beatles because my sister said that she never knew there was a song called Michelle). Got home maybe mid-afternoon? I spent a few hours looking at trip photos/videos from when my dad was on his trip – there’s the most adorable photo of the behind of a red panda! And giant pandas! And other awesome animals! And then there were photos of relatives that I recognize (ahem, I’ve apparently met all of my uncles and aunts, at least the ones that were living when I was born, but I only recognize a handful of them because I’ve never been back to visit them after that first time… When I was under 2 years old…).
Oh, also while I was out today, I found someone’s hiding spot outside of the restaurant that my family went to for lunch (the bottle was full and unopened – but I left it there):

Sunday’s been pretty busy. I woke up fairly early and ended up making breakfast for everyone (out of my goodness of my heart… J thought it was because I wanted those three balls of merino yarn that she has – not true! She ended up letting me have them anyways, as my sister would like to use up some of the yarn that she has in order to justify new yummy yarn purchases in the future – i.e. on December 26th) and we all sat around the table and ate… well, I ate while trying to come up with a name for the new doll. And my dentist appointment yesterday was discussed.
Apparently my wisdom is lacking. Or rather, my wisdom teeth suck. And I have a nice handful (3-4, the dentist isn’t even sure how many there were…) cavities that need to be filled. The cleaning went splendidly though, the dental hygienist I got was really chatty and friendly – such a better experience than the previous few times, besides the last time I went, that I’ve gone to that dentist. I got a tooth brushing lesson too, hah. Apparently I brush too hard… But yeah, ended up making a new appointment for sometime in December (during the week that I have between my 3rd and 4th/last final) to get the fillings done. And then I have to go and call back in a couple of days and make an appointment for during my February Reading Break because guess who’s wisdom teeth are definitely coming out?
If you guessed mine, you get a cookie. My two wisdom teeth are definitely needing to come out, one of them shows signs of a cavity beginning to form, and apparently it’s next to impossible to actually be able to fill it at the angle that my lovely tooth decide to come in. Oh, and for one of my bottom wisdom teeth, the one that’s showing, it’ll need to be cut out because right now it’ll never continue to come out due to the fact that it’s angled itself to grow into my other tooth… And they’re not even sure where my 4th/last wisdom tooth in (bottom right). Apparently it could have never formed or just be doing the same thing as the one on the left and impacting another tooth. So yeah, I’ll need to get at least three teeth removed (whoot…) so I’m going to get it done when I have time off from school so I won’t be drugged up and trying to write midterms or papers. Good idea? I thought so.
For those who have gotten their wisdom teeth removed… Did you get general or local anesthesia? What did you like about your decision?
[Edit] Local means that they only numb the area around where the tooth is getting extracted (usually multiple injections in your gums and cheeks so you don’t feel anything). General would be where you’re completely knocked out and just wake up to have the teeth extracted and probably feeling incredibly groggy.

New purse (which happens to fit Blythes…?) – it’s pretty roomy, I could fit my entire old purse into this one and still have a lot of room left over
My dad picked this one out. When you slide it open, there’s a surprise inside.
And last, but certainly not least, a new Blythe doll! Stock name is Simply Peppermint, I have no clue what I’m going to be naming this little beauty though.
Name suggestions would be awesome.
