In wake of two earthquakes that occurred this past week (in China and Japan), I was feeling a little hopeless in my ability to just do something. Also, thoughts of what could still possibly happen with the nuclear reactors and what that could mean for everyone in the world (the radioactive fallout has the full capability of reaching British Columbia via jetstream). So I needed to find something to do.

Today, I donated blood. It was my first successful attempt at blood donation. All of my other attempts had been hindered by low body weight, low iron levels and having new piercings within a year. But none of those things stopped my blood donation attempt today. And luckily, I don’t engage in risky behaviour and didn’t live in certain countries before I was even born. I was given a juice box and had a choice of several types of cookies afterwards (hello, sugar). So if you ever receive an O+ blood transfusion in British Columbia…

Other than watching my blood leave my body today (which I thought was kind awesome), I didn’t do anything too exciting. I did bake some cookies, watched two segments from the Life documentary series (Mammals and Fish). Just another segment or so before the one all about Insects, yes! I feel the need to watch it entirely in order, but I’m looking forward to the segment about insects. Love insects.

Hope you all have had a good week. If you have family and friends in the earthquake and tsunami affected regions, I hope they are well and you’ve been able to get in contact with them.

  1. i think that is awesome that you donated blood! I am o+ myself. I however am exceptionally mortified at needles…but yes I am proud of you 🙂

  2. Congratulations on your first successful blood donation! I have always wanted to do that, but I have such a fear of needles that even getting blood drawn at the doctor’s makes me queasy and they usually end up having to take special care with me. I think it’s great that you were able to do that and feel like you’ve made a difference somehow.

So now if I’m ever in British Columbia and need some O+ blood, I’ll thank you. 😉
