On sea otters and school

There are five fantastic reasons why I decided on the sea otter as the feature for this new theme:

  • Sea otters are native to the coasts of north and east parts of the Pacific Ocean
  • They are a keystone species and an incredibly important part of the ecosystem that they are from (and did you know that sea otters have the conversation status of being endangered?)
  • They eat sea urchins, which helps prevent sea urchins from mowing down kelp forests
  • They use tools (such as rocks) to get and open their food
  • They float on their backs (and look darn cute while doing it)

The photos feature were taken when I went to the Vancouver Aquarium in June of this year.

I’m enjoying my classes so far, for the most part. The introductory parts just finished my ecology and animal mechanics classes. The actual course content began today for entomology and for oceanography, it started last week. So far, classes have been going well, I’ve been keeping up with readings. The only trouble that I’ve ran into so far is that my oceanography class has assignments after every lecture (and is followed by a short online quiz), and they draw heavily from 100-level chemistry, physics and biology and high school level math. Now, high school level math I have no issues with. I also don’t have any issues with first year biology, and for most aspects of 100-level chemistry, I’m pretty okay with (now). 100-level physics? I hadn’t taken that since 2008, so I’ve been relying on old notes and old textbooks to help me out there. So it’s going okay, but quite a bit more work than originally anticipated… But I’m learning a lot, and it’s really interesting so far!

I think I’ve pretty much fallen into a routine. Right now, I haven’t spent a lot of extra time at school as I’ve been able to be productive at home with the studying and the readings, I’ll probably start spending some more time at school once October rolls after as midterms will be rampant at that time and I could with slightly less distractions then. But for right now, it’s alright, since it’s still the beginning. I am looking forward to learning more as the term progresses. Whenever I look at the timeline on the syllabus for what’s being taught when and when the midterms are, it’s all very compact. The term is only thirteen weeks long and it’s already week two! Time flies when you’re having fun, I guess?

    About a month ago, I saw a documentary about otters and fell in love. They’re just so adorable that if it was possible, I’d keep one as a pet and keep it in my bathtub. If only!

      I *love* sea otters, and the majority of marine wildlife – I may have watched Blue Planet in its entirety far too many times to count. I think a sea otter would probably be miffed if it was living in a bathtub though 😉

      Ahh, yes, that too! I remember seeing a photo of that once and I thought it was *the* cutest thing ever. *briefly muses about switching to a marine biology major for the millionth time*
